The first blooms of the season are up and buds are appearing on the trees across the street in Central Park—Spring is finally here at MCNY! We have a dynamic roster of events and offerings this season. Check out everything happening at MCNY this Spring season below: 

Explore Spring Program Series:

  • Urban Ecosystems | Living Among the Plants, Animals, and Fungi of NYC—Eat, drink, and join us for an evening of eco-centric storytelling just in time for Earth Day. Plant-based cheeses, crackers, cocktails, and mocktails featuring locally-foraged ingredients will be served!
  • Cocktails and Culture | Spring Jazz— Swing into spring at our May edition of Cocktails & Culture! Enjoy a night filled with live jazz, food & drink, and a creative writing workshop. Free with Museum admission 
  • Movies for Minis— Join us for our monthly series of New York City-themed family film screenings, MCNY’S Movies for Minis! These indoor movies are for children and families, and the super cool thing about all of the movies we’ll show is that they are all filmed or animated with New York City as the backdrop.
  •  StoryTime @ MCNY: City Citters—Drop in every friday for our storytime series, featuring NYC-themed picture books, interactive activities, and more. FREE! April's theme is City Critters! 

Celebrate AAPI Heritage Month at MCNY:

The Museum of the City of New York is pleased to celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) heritage month. See highlights of our programs below, and read on for more ways to explore AAPI heritage with the Museum.

  • Moonlight & Movies: Americanish—Not just your everyday rom-com, three young Pakistani American women navigate the conflicting demands of romance, culture, work, and family. 

  • Hidden Voices of New York City — This virtual workshop series highlights and honors the individual and collective experiences of a diverse swath of New Yorkers. In honor of AAPI heritage month discover the life and legacy of 19th-century journalist and activist Wong Chin Foo, this month’s Hidden Voice. Upcoming workshops for Educators, May 3rd, 5pm and Students, May 17th, 9:30am and 11:30am

  • City of Faith: Religion, Activism, and Urban Space—look under the surface of New York’s image as a secular city and discover the complex and often surprising relationships that connect religion to public space in New York City. 

  • Raise Your VoiceRaise Your Voice is an immersive installation by Brooklyn-based artist Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya, who the White House recently appointed o the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. Installed adjacent to the ongoing exhibition, Activist New York, Raise Your Voice poses a series of questions and invites audiences to engage their own powers of advocacy and activism.

Explore this selection of digital content that highlights the voices of some of the journalists, photographers, and members of the Asian American community in NYC.

  • Beautiful Country: An Evening with Qian Julie Wang— Author and litigator, Qian Julie Wang, delivered the Museum of the City of New York's Robert A. and Elizabeth R. Jeffe Distinguished Lecture in Urban History, reflecting on her best-selling 2021 memoir, "Beautiful Country," and discussing her own childhood journey from China to Brooklyn in conversation with poet Ken Chen.
  • #Activist NY: Marion's Story — Marian Thom is a union activist and retired bilingual paraprofessional spotlighted in our "Activist New York" exhibition. Thom helped organize paraprofessionals, or teaching assistants, for membership in the United Federation of Teachers, the New York City public school teacher’s union. She also advocated for local housing rights as a member of the board of directors for Confucius Plaza housing for 15 years.
  • Leading Tokyo Today: A Conversation with Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike — The Museum hosted a webinar in collaboration with the Japan Society and shared a discussion with Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike. She became the Governor of Tokyo since July 2016 and is the city's first female Governor, paving the way for women’s empowerment in Japan. The conversation is centered around sustainable recovery, green finance, women’s empowerment, and the upcoming Summer Games.

  • This is New York: 100 Years of the City in Art and Pop Culture​​​​​​— Opens to the public May 26, 2023. Celebrate our centennial and explore the many ways that the city has inspired storytelling in the past 100 years. Featuring famous and lesser-known images of New York in film and television, song and poetry, literature, visual and performing arts, and fashion the exhibition paints a collective, moving and even funny version of a city that has captured the imagination of the world.
