Join us as we explore the life of Wong Chin Foo (1847-1898), a journalist, lecturer, and activist who became an outspoken critic of anti-Chinese sentiment and stereotypes in the United States with guest speaker Scott D. Seligman, author of The First Chinese American: The Remarkable Life of Wong Chin Foo (2013) in this virtual talk, part of our series Hidden Voices of New York City.

The AAPI community in New York City and across the country has endured abuse and discrimination during the pandemic; in the United States we can trace this racism towards Asian Americans back to the 1800s. The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 was designed explicitly to bar Chinese laborers from entering the country because of widespread xenophobia and concerns about workplace competition. Activists and community leaders like Wong Chin Foo used their voice to speak out against stereotypes and discrimination. As Chinese Exclusion Laws hardened, Wong stepped up his activism, founding the Chinese Equal Rights League in 1892 and testifying before Congress. Wong was also the first to use the term “Chinese American” in his newspaper, an identity that has united activists in their fight for greater equality.

This program is geared towards educators but open to all with interest in the topic. In this virtual program, examine primary resources to learn about Wong Chin Foo’s life and legacy, hear from our guest speaker, and leave inspired with new ideas to bring this important Hidden Voice into your classroom. Participants will be provided with a list of resources after the session.
