Virtual Student Workshop (Grades K-5): Puppets of New York

Sign up your class for a free, interactive student workshop celebrating the artform of puppetry and stories of community in New York City.
Students will explore the many ways that New Yorkers have brought puppets to life on the screen, in plays, and on the streets in New York City! Students will see puppets of all shapes and sizes from the Puppets of New York exhibition and hear stories about how puppets are developed, manipulated, and used as tools for building connections and standing up for causes. Drawing inspiration from the rich and diverse traditions of puppetry in New York City, participants will follow along the live art-making demonstration and create their own puppets with just paper and pencil.

Students will join a live Zoom session led by Museum Educators; see below for more details. Individuals or classes are invited. Teachers interested in registering their classes can do so.
FREE. Advance registration required.
Registration Details: Individuals or classes are invited to register. Teachers interested in registering a class of up to 35 students can do so. Multiple classes from the same school can register if there is a different teacher in charge of the registration for each class.
How it Works: Students will join other students in these live and interactive sessions led over Zoom by Museum Educators in a setting that balances active engagement and privacy. Participants will see and discuss visuals from the Museum’s exhibitions and collections and connect the past to our present.
Materials: For this program, students will need:
- a sheet of paper
- a pencil or pen
- (optional) scissors
- (optional) markers or colored pencils
- any other drawing materials students like to use
Security and Interaction: Sessions will be presented as webinars; students are able to submit questions, comments, and observations to the moderators and complete polls and other activities, but will not use cameras or mics and will not be visible on screen.
