Inspired by the museum’s centennial exhibition This Is New York: 100 Years of the City in Art and Pop Culture, explore what moves New York City’s streets and subways with art activities, story time, and music and movement.

Storytime and Author Talk with Jessica Love at 12pm

Join us at the Museum for a special edition of Storytime with Jessica Love, author and illustrator of award-winning children’s book Julián is a Mermaid. Julián is a story of a little boy who wants to become a mermaid and uses common household items to build his costume in preparation for the Coney Island Mermaid Parade. Children of all ages are invited to participate in this exciting program where they will listen as Love reads her book.

Make Your Own Picture Book with Jessica Love at 1pm

Join us at the Museum for an artist-led picture book making workshop facilitated by Jessica Love, author and illustrator of award-winning children’s book Julián is a Mermaid. During the workshop, children will make their own picture books drawing inspiration from the prompt: A Perfect Day in New York—what do you think is the perfect day in New York City? 

Price: $5 for children. Included with admission for adults.

This program is geared to children ages 7 and up. All materials will be provided. No experience necessary. Participating children must be accompanied by their grownups. 

Space is limited to 25 child participants. Registration deadline: Thursday, April 25. 

About Jessica Love

Jessica Love is the award winning author & illustrator of Julián Is a Mermaid, Julián at the Wedding and A Bed of Stars. She studied Visual Art at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and then Drama at The Juilliard School. She lived New York City for 15 years making plays, and now she lives in the Hudson Valley with her husband and son, and makes books.

Pick up a scavenger hunt or a kids’ guide and visit the exhibition This Is New York: 100 Years of the City in Art and Pop Culture.

Arts & Crafts

Participate in arts and crafts activities inspired by artworks featured in our centennial exhibition, This Is New York. Create a variety of objects to take home – from sketches to mosaics – with a different activity each day.

Storytime @ MCNY

StoryTime @ MCNY is a free, drop-in, picture-book reading series geared towards children ages 3 to 5 and their grownups. This week, join us for stories that celebrate New York City culture on the streets and subways. Pre-registration is recommended but not required.

Pre-registration is recommended and can be completed using the registration link above. Registrants will receive a reminder email about the event. All activities above are free with Museum Admission. Pay-what-you-wish admission is only available at ticket counters.
