Educator Evening: From the Dance Floor to the Classroom: Movement as a Pedagogical Tool

Explore the power of using dance and movement as a teaching tool in our newest exhibition Urban Stomp: Dreams and Defiance on the Dance Floor. Whether you teach History, Science, Math, or Art, this evening will prepare you to get moving with your students! During an interactive guided experience* in Urban Stomp, Curator Dr. Derrick Washington – in conversation with Sarah Farmer, MNCY Manager of Professional Learning – will share the stories of New York City’s vibrant dance cultures and demonstrate strategies for developing movement-based activities for your students.
Celebrating the creativity and joy of New York City dance cultures, Urban Stomp: Dreams & Defiance on the Dance Floor is a first-of-its-kind exhibition that explores over 200 years of social dance in the city, from the ballrooms and bars of the 19th century to the parks, living rooms, and clubs of today. The exhibition illuminates how New York’s dance cultures and their related dance floors create spaces of collective celebration and social possibilities that have an impact everywhere.
*Accessibility Note: While this activity encourages movement, it is designed to be accessible to individuals with a wide range of abilities. Participants can choose to not move or move at their own pace and may stop at any time if needed.
The evening will feature a reception with non-alcoholic beverages and light bites.
