Movie poster for 'Drop Dead City' depicting caricatured figures falling from a broken ladder with floating money against a cityscape backdrop.

On October 30, 1975, the New York Daily News headline read “Ford to City: Drop Dead.” New York City was teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, and President Ford would veto and refuse to sign any bill that provided a federal bailout for the city. On the 50th anniversary of that headline, join us for a screening of Drop Dead City, a documentary exploring the financial crisis of 1975. Following the screening we will be joined by Peter Goldmark, former NYS Budget Secretary, Herb Elish, former Executive Director of the Municipal Assistance Corporation, and Ginia Bellefante, New York Times Reporter, for a post-screening discussion on how the crisis shaped the trajectory of the Nation's most impactful city.

This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
