Course Description:

In this dynamic six-session program, learn how to use the camera to capture your personal relationship to New York City while learning the history behind some of the city’s most iconic structures and places.

The course will explore history, urban observation, visual literacy, and the art and practice of photography, including a variety of photographic techniques and processes such as point-of-view, cyanotype prints, and portraiture. This course brings together the art and historical significance of photographs, modeling how to bring photography and social studies together in teaching.

Throughout the course, view and discuss photographs from the Museum’s collection and those taken by course participants. Hone your skills through observation and discussion and gain visual literacy skills and best practices for encouraging students to use visual analysis as a key learning and observational tool. Gain experience using digital cameras (a professional digital camera is provided for your use during the week) to develop your compositional skills while considering the lighting, framing, perspective, and tone of images. At the end of the course, curate your best photographs and present them to their peers during a critique.

Field trips and behind-the-scenes tours complement the learning. In addition to photographing the major components of the city, including buildings, parks, landmarks, and people, you will study important photographers such as Jacob Riis, Berenice Abbott, and Stanley Kubrick. Each session will focus on a different aspect of the city and its history, enhanced by viewing works from the Museum’s renowned photography collection. In addition, participants will discuss key shifts and conflicts in the development of New York City, such as urban renewal and displacement in the 1960s near Lincoln Center, while learning how to help students see these shifts over engage in dialogue about neighborhood development and change today.
