A+/P Credit Course: Occupied: New York and the American Revolution

Change the way you understand the American Revolution. Drawing on The Occupied City: New York and the American Revolution, this interactive course explores the Revolutionary period in New York through the lens of individuals living in and around the city at that time. 

Course Description

Marking the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, The Occupied City: New York and the American Revolution—developed in partnership with the Gotham Center for New York City History—frames the Revolution as a story of civic choice and consequence. The exhibition underscores how decisions made by New Yorkers 250 years ago continue to reverberate across the city and the nation today. The Occupied City tells the powerful and complex stories of revolutionaries and loyalists, enslaved and free Black New Yorkers, women, Native peoples, and others who shaped and were shaped by this turbulent time. This exhibition invites visitors to see the Revolution not as a distant myth, but as a lived—and deeply contested—urban experience.

Through gallery experiences at the museum, hands-on workshops, discussions, guest lectures, and writing exercises, educators will gain a deeper understanding of life in New York City during the Revolutionary War period and find connections between their students’ lives and those of New Yorkers past. 

This course covers subject matter relevant to history/social studies, English language arts, and civics and is recommended for educators of grades 3 -12, including those working with multilingual learners and students with special needs.

Course Calendar & Details

This is an in-person course that runs from November 7th - November 14th. This course takes place at the Museum of the City of New York, located at 1220 Fifth Avenue at 103rd Street in Manhattan. Please see the full course schedule below:

Registration

Registration for Occupied: New York and the American Revolution is a two-step process for those taking the course for A+/P Credit. Educators interested in taking this course not for A+/P Credit are welcome to do so and only need to complete Step 1. All eligible educators receive CTLE credit for the course hours. 

Step 1

Register with the Museum for Occupied: New York and the American Revolution using the "Register" button at the top of this page and pay the Museum's course fee of $95.

Step 2

Register through the ASPDP portal for course P140-14569.1F26 Occupied: New York and the American Revolution and pay the NYC DOE ASPDP course fee of $45. Registration for this course closes at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, November 6, 2026.

Participant Policies

Participants must register for a course with both ASPDP and the Museum of the City of New York in order to be eligible to receive A+/P Credits. ASPDP has a strict registration deadline; participants who do not register for ASPDP by the deadline will not be eligible for A+/P credit.

Norms of Behavior

To maintain a respectful and productive learning environment, all participants are expected to adhere to our professional learning norms of behavior, including active engagement, mutual respect, and open-minded collaboration. We reserve the right to remove any participant whose behavior disrupts the learning experience or violates these norms.

Need to Cancel?

The Museum of the City of New York ("the Museum") offers refunds of its educational partner fee for A+/P Credit courses if a participant requests to withdraw from their registered course at least three (3) business days in advance of the registration deadline for that course. 

Participants must contact ASPDP to receive a refund for the ASPDP course fee. To view the policy for ASPDP course fee refunds, please click here.  

If a participant must withdraw from a Museum A+/P Credit course after the first day of the course, the Museum offers participants the value of the course as a credit for future MCNY education programming.
