American Utopia: David Byrne and Maira Kalman in Conversation

Former Talking Heads frontman and multimedia artist David Byrne and best-selling author, illustrator and artist Maira Kalman discuss their new collaboration, a book inspired by Byrne's award-winning musical American Utopia (Bloomsbury, October 2020). The two will sit down for a virtual conversation with WNYC's Alison Stewart about creating the book and their decades-long careers as New York artists.

This is a virtual event which will take place via Zoom. Registrants will receive a link to watch in advance.

About the Speakers:
David Byrne was born in Scotland in 1952 and is now an artist, writer and musician who since 1974 has lived in New York City. He has a daughter and a grandson.

Maira Kalman was born in Tel Aviv in 1949 and is now an artist, writer, and designer who since 1954 has lived in New York City. She has a daughter, a son, and two grandchildren.

Alison Stewart (moderator) is host of All Of It with Alison Stewart, WNYC’s daily live afternoon program about culture and the culture in and around New York City.  She is also the host of the monthly book club Get Lit with All of It, a partnership with The New York Public Library. Stewart began her media career shortly after graduating from Brown University as a producer/reporter for MTV News’ breakthrough presidential campaign coverage “Choose or Lose” -- which earned her a Peabody Award. She has spent more than two decades reporting and has anchored her own news programs on NPR, PBS, ABC and MSNBC including NPR’s digital news program Bryant Park Project and the first season of TED Radio Hour.  She’s a contributor with The Atlantic LIVE and PBS NewsHour and the author of two books; FIRST CLASS: The Legacy of Dunbar, America's First Black Public High School and JUNK: Digging Through America’s Love Affair with Stuff.
