Are the field trips interactive? 

Student experiences at the Museum of the City of New York are driven by inquiry, dialogue, and hands-on activities. Educators will use interactive techniques to encourage active learning and student participation. 

How many students and chaperones can attend a field trip?

Each field trip accommodates a maximum of 35 students and six adults. For groups with more than 35 students, you may request multiple simultaneous field trips in different spaces. The Museum asks that you assign at least one adult to every ten students.

Is there a place where students can eat lunch?

The Museum does not have any eating facilities– please plan accordingly!

The Museum is located across the street from Central Park’s Conservatory Garden. Weather permitting, the Museum’s Fifth Avenue terrace may be available for seating on a first-come, first-served basis. The Museum does not accept food deliveries for groups sent to the Museum.

How much does each field trip cost?

Each Field Trip costs $175.00 as a flat rate for a maximum of 35 students and six adults.

How do I pay for the Field Trip?

The Museum accepts cash, check, credit card, and purchase orders (Vendor Code MUS015000)

Field Trip payments are not refundable.

What is the cancellation policy? 

Groups that cannot make their visit must cancel by e-mail with at least two weeks’ notice or they will not be able to reschedule.Because our educators are coming in specifically for your Field Trip, more than one cancellation will prohibit the entire school from scheduling any future group reservations for the rest of the school year. All cancellation notices and rescheduling requests must e-mailed to schoolprograms@mcny.org.

What are the directions to the Museum?

  • The Museum of the City of New York is located at 1220 Fifth Avenue, between 103rd and 104th Streets.
  • By bus: M1, M3, M4, or M106 to 104th street, M2 to 101st Street.
  • By subway: Lexington Avenue #6 train to 103rd Street, walk three blocks west, or #2 or #3 train to 110th Street, walk one block east to Fifth Avenue, then south to 104th Street.

Where should my group enter the Museum and check in?

The Education Entrance is on 104th Street, between Fifth and Madison Avenue. Ramp access is available at the 104th Street entrance.

Upon arrival, you will be asked to check in with a Visitor Services staff person. This will involve paying any outstanding balance and providing the final attendance for your group.

What are the accessibility accommodations at the Museum?

Ramp access is available at the 104th Street entrance, around the corner from Fifth Avenue.

What time should groups arrive before their scheduled field trip?

Due to the high volume of Field Trips occurring each day, we must adhere to the scheduled start times for each program and do not have a space to accommodate groups arriving more than 15 minutes early.

If a school books multiple programs with staggered start times, each class is expected to arrive separately at their scheduled program start time

What happens if my group is late?

If your group is running late, please e-mail schoolprograms@mcny.org or call 917.492.3334 immediately. Your Field Trip may be shortened accordingly.

Are the Museum’s programs accessible for all types of learners?

The Museum welcomes students of all needs and abilities. When completing the Field Trip Request Form, please describe your students' needs so we can best prepare for your students. Any information you can provide is appreciated and will be shared with your Museum Educator.

What is the difference between Gallery Programs and History Labs? 

Gallery Programs provide 60-minute interactive tours in the Museum’s exhibitions where students will see artifacts, art, and multimedia presentation about New York. History Labs provide 75-minute hands-on experiences in the Museum’s classroom spaces that are specially designed for elementary school students, encouraging project-based and multi-modal learning.

Are there pre- and post-visit curriculum materials available for classroom use?

We encourage teachers to visit the Museum on their own before their Field Trip. Teachers always receive free individual admission to the Museum and a 15% discount in the Museum Shops with ID.

The Museum will provide all materials for your Field Trip.
