Welcome to This Is New York: 100 Years of the City in Art and Pop Culture

What comes to mind when you think of New York City? It could well be a real place or a moment from your own personal experience of the city. But there’s also a good chance that it’s an image or sound created by one of the countless artists who have made this the world’s most represented and reproduced metropolis.

The ways these creators have depicted New York—whether they love it or hate it—are as basic to the city’s existence as subways, skyscrapers, and corner bodegas. The scenes and stories from their books, plays, movies, and television shows are woven into our daily lives. Their paintings, sculptures, and photographs show us new angles and hidden corners. Their music is in our ears, their dances in our steps as we walk down the street. And in every one of those depictions, there’s a story.

To mark 100 years of the Museum of the City of New York as the city’s storyteller, this exhibition explores the many ways that the city has inspired artists and creators of all kinds to tell its stories. The galleries are organized around the types of places where the human-scale stories of New York are so often set—the city’s bustling streets and subways, its iconic parks and waterfronts, its restaurants and nightspots, and the vibrant neighborhoods and dense apartment buildings where New Yorkers live.

Covering the century since the Museum was founded, THIS IS NEW YORK illustrates both the massive changes and the enduring themes that have shaped the many stories we tell about New York City.
