The Mythic City

During the 1920s and '30s, architectural photographer Samuel H. Gottscho created a portrait of New York as a city of contrasts. The Mythic City: Photographs of New York by Samuel H. Gottscho, 1925-1940 features nearly 150 black and white photographs of New York City’s iconic skylines and bridges, sleek modern interiors, and signature skyscrapers. Set among the ornate and traditional architecture of the previous century, Gottscho’s images evoke a city of ideals and transformation. The Mythic City was exhibited at the Museum of the City of New York November 1, 2005 – March 30, 2006.
