Generations of moviegoers have seen New York depicted and distorted, celebrated and denigrated, idealized and mocked, built up and demolished over and over again on the big screen. Over the past 100 years, legions of filmmakers have drawn attention to New Yorkers’ joys and struggles, shaping our ideas of what the city is—or could become. </p><p>YOU ARE HERE draws on this rich archive of movies set in New York, combining thousands of cinematic moments across 16 screens. Sources include Hollywood blockbusters, independent films, documentaries, and experimental works. By juxtaposing these multiple visions, the dazzling montages of YOU ARE HERE make connections and contrasts that allow movies to comment on each other across time and space. Together, they shed new light on the varied New Yorks of our collective imagination. </p><p>Sometimes New York stars in these movies; sometimes, a studio set or even another city stands in. In the introductory room, Scenes from the City explores the city as a film set, showing how movies have been captured on location throughout the five boroughs. From there, we invite you to enter the immersive central space, where you can explore a narrative tapestry woven from hundreds of films—one impressionistic storyline that strives to represent the multifaceted realities of our countless New York stories. </p><p>Watch the Official Trailer below:</p><div class="video-embed-field-provider-youtube video-embed-field-responsive-video"><iframe width="854" height="480" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" title="&#039;You Are Here&#039; Trailer" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/RtRMwMyx4Tg?autoplay=0&amp;start=0&amp;rel=0"></iframe> </div> </div> <div> <div>Thumbnail</div> <div><a href="/media/24445" hreflang="en">You Are Here Install. </a></div> </div> <div> <div>Start Date</div> <div><time datetime="2023-05-26T12:00:00Z">Fri, 05/26/2023 - 12:00</time> </div> </div> <div> <div>End Date</div> <div><time datetime="2025-10-05T12:00:00Z">Sun, 10/05/2025 - 12:00</time> </div> </div> <div> <div>Exhibition Category</div> <div> <div><a href="/exhibitions/art-and-design" hreflang="en">Art and Design</a></div> </div> </div> <div> <div>Summary</div> <div>“You Are Here” draws on the rich archive of movies set in New York, combining thousands of cinematic moments across 16 screens.</div> </div> <div> <div>Seasonal Opening Date</div> <div>0</div> </div> <div> <div>Featured Image Credit</div> <div>Photo by Brad Farwell</div> </div> <div>1</div> <div> <div>&quot;Back To&quot; Link</div> <div><a href="/exhibitions">Back to Exhibitions</a></div> </div> Tue, 23 Jan 2024 17:17:38 +0000 mmclaughlin 7669 at https://www.mcny.org Four Seasons of Central Park https://www.mcny.org/exhibition/four-seasons-central-park <span>Four Seasons of Central Park</span> <span><span>tdawson</span></span> <span><time datetime="2023-12-19T14:46:43-05:00" title="Tuesday, December 19, 2023 - 14:46">Tue, 12/19/2023 - 14:46</time> </span> <section class="in-depth page-padding-flexible w-100 related-content-cards"> <div class="container"> <div class="row"> <div class="col-xs-12 col-sm-12 col-lg-8 offset-lg-2"> <h2 class="section-title h1"> <div>Press for the Exhibition</div> </h2> </div> </div> <div class="row is-flex "> <div class="col-xs-12 col-sm-12 col-lg-8 offset-lg-2 card-deck w-100"> <div class="col-3 col-xs-12 col-sm-4 gutter-bottom m-x-auto with-image"> <article class="card square"> <div class="img-wrap"> <a href="https://www.mcny.org/press-four-seasons-central-park"> <figure class="card-img"> <img srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/square_320/public/Exhibitions_2024.02_Brosen-_BelvedereCastle.jpg?h=ce077911&amp;itok=AFrYIgjR 320w, /sites/default/files/styles/square_460/public/Exhibitions_2024.02_Brosen-_BelvedereCastle.jpg?h=ce077911&amp;itok=845smI76 460w, /sites/default/files/styles/square_600/public/Exhibitions_2024.02_Brosen-_BelvedereCastle.jpg?h=ce077911&amp;itok=7XEyLL46 600w, /sites/default/files/styles/square_740/public/Exhibitions_2024.02_Brosen-_BelvedereCastle.jpg?h=ce077911&amp;itok=Xp5h4HoU 740w, /sites/default/files/styles/square_880/public/Exhibitions_2024.02_Brosen-_BelvedereCastle.jpg?h=ce077911&amp;itok=8IZO3lcQ 880w, /sites/default/files/styles/square_1020/public/Exhibitions_2024.02_Brosen-_BelvedereCastle.jpg?h=ce077911&amp;itok=899AVqNR 1020w, /sites/default/files/styles/square_1160/public/Exhibitions_2024.02_Brosen-_BelvedereCastle.jpg?h=ce077911&amp;itok=KkxGFsnS 1160w, /sites/default/files/styles/square_1300/public/Exhibitions_2024.02_Brosen-_BelvedereCastle.jpg?h=ce077911&amp;itok=F197h3RM 1300w" sizes="(min-width:1350px) 420px, (min-width:544px) 33vw, 100vw" width="880" height="880" src="/sites/default/files/styles/square_320/public/Exhibitions_2024.02_Brosen-_BelvedereCastle.jpg?h=ce077911&amp;itok=AFrYIgjR" alt="Watercolor of Central Park showing Belvedere Castle in the Summer." loading="lazy" /> </figure> <div class="border"></div> </a> </div> <div class="card-block"> <h2> <a href="https://www.mcny.org/press-four-seasons-central-park">Press for Four Seasons of Central Park</a> </h2> "20 Best Museum Exhibits & Installations In NYC Right Now" (February 26, 2024) —Secret NYC </div> </article> </div> </div> </div> <div class="row"> <div class="col-xs-12 text-align-center"> </div> </div> </div></section> <div> <div> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/Exhibitions_2024.02_Brosen-_BelvedereCastle.jpg" width="4817" height="3497" alt="Watercolor of Central Park showing Belvedere Castle in the Summer." /> </div> </div> <div>Watercolors by Frederick Brosen </div> <div><p>New Yorker Frederick Brosen is well known as a meticulous visual chronicler of New York City’s streets, capturing through his astonishing watercolor brushwork the complex layers of the urban landscape. For this installation, he has turned his eye upon the great bucolic heart of the city—Manhattan’s Central Park. Through a quartet of carefully observed scenes, he chronicles a landscape that is both changing and seemingly timeless. Cycling through Central Park across Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring—from the widest to the most intimate of vantages—these four quietly iconic paintings capture a year in some of the most historic places in this verdant urban masterpiece.  </p><p> <br /><strong>About the Artist: </strong><br />A native New Yorker, Frederick Brosen studied at the City College of New York, the Art Students League, and Pratt Institute. " /> </div> </div> <div>New York by Manny Vega</div> <div><p>The experience of walking El Barrio—the Museum of the City of New York’s own neighborhood—would be vastly different without the artworks of Manny Vega (b. Bronx, 1956). His mosaics and murals adorn street walls, subway stations, cultural centers, and business facades throughout East Harlem. Many of these works celebrate important figures—particularly women—in the history of the Puerto Rican and Latinx communities. Vega has proven himself deft at negotiating the sophisticated tastes and appetite for spectacle of an extremely diverse and fast-moving population. His style has been dubbed “Byzantine Hip-Hop” for his uncompromising technical command that encompasses ancient Mediterranean mosaic-making and the electrifying lines of hyper-detailed Sharpie pen-and-ink drawings.  </p><p>As part of the Museum’s centennial year celebration, <em><strong>Byzantine Bembé: New York by Manny Vega</strong></em> explores Vega's visual storytelling as it interweaves community stories with themes that range from African deities to urban mythologies, spanning the personal and the collective. Deeply rooted in an idiosyncratic understanding of the diaspora experience, which in his case includes communities in El Bronx, El Barrio, and Bahia, Brazil, Vega’s worldview is colorful, danceable, passionately spiritual, and complex-yet-accessible. The show marks the Museum’s commitment to its thriving neighborhood as it looks ahead to its next one hundred years.  </p></div> <div> <div>Thumbnail</div> <div><a href="/media/24744" hreflang="en">Bomba Celestial</a></div> </div> <div> <div>Start Date</div> <div><time datetime="2023-12-08T12:00:00Z">Fri, 12/08/2023 - 12:00</time> </div> </div> <div> <div>End Date</div> <div><time datetime="2024-12-08T12:00:00Z">Sun, 12/08/2024 - 12:00</time> </div> </div> <div> <div>Exhibition Category</div> <div> <div><a href="/exhibitions/art-and-design" hreflang="en">Art and Design</a></div> </div> </div> <div> <div>Sponsor(s)</div> <div><div class="paragraph-sponsors"> <section class="sponsors page-padding"> <h3>Supporters</h3> <p><p><strong><em>Byzantine Bembé: New York by Manny Vega </em></strong>is made possible in part by the Mellon Foundation, Basha Rubin and Scott Grinsell, and Kathleen Benson Haskins. Stettheimer, who had passed away the year before. </p> <p>Today, the Stettheimer “doll’s house” – an artistic model made over the course of nearly two decades between 1916 and 1935 – is one of the great treasures of the Museum of the City of New York. Carrie, along with her sisters Ettie and Florine, hosted a famous artistic salon in the early 20th century, which influential art historian and critic Arthur Danto later called the “American Bloomsbury.” Ettie was a philosopher and novelist; Florine was a painter; Carrie was an aspiring theatrical designer whose artistic goals were derailed by her obligations to run the household. Her creative energies were channeled instead into the crafting of a miniature world whose interior reflected the Stettheimers’ life in their fashionable apartment and reflected the avant-garde artistic circles of New York in the 1920s </p> <p>For 19 years, Carrie Stettheimer worked on this three-dimensional work of art, reflecting and reinterpreting the artistic, aesthetic, and cultural milieu in which she and her sisters moved. Among its most outstanding features is the ballroom, which features miniature works gifted to Carrie by some of the leading names of modern art in New York in the 1910s and 1920s, including Louis Bouché, Gaston Lachaise, Marguerite and William Zorach, and many others. A particular highlight is Marcel Duchamp’s miniature version of his famous <em>Nude Descending a Staircase</em>, which had created a sensation at the 1913 Armory Show in New York City. </p> <p>Seventy-five years later, the Museum celebrates the anniversary of this extraordinary gift with a reinstallation of the famous Stettheimer dollhouse. A new, dedicated gallery will provide greater access to this extraordinary object during this time of social distancing, as well as biographical information about the Stettheimer sisters and the members of their circle, including influential artists who made miniature artworks for the house. Visitors will be able to view the house, learn about its features, view enlarged images of the tiny details, and discover rarely seen additional miniature works by some of the leading lights of early 20th-century modernism, among them a miniature George Bellows.  </p> <p>As Carrie’s sister Ettie wrote about the gift of the dollhouse to the Museum of the City of New York, “I feel certain that no repository would have been more satisfactory to her than the museum of her own city.” </p> <p> </p></div> <div> <div>Thumbnail</div> <div><a href="/media/21992" hreflang="en">Exhibitions_StettheimerDollhouse</a></div> </div> <div> <div>Start Date</div> <div><time datetime="2020-11-20T12:00:00Z">Fri, 11/20/2020 - 12:00</time> </div> </div> <div> <div>End Date</div> <div><time datetime="2022-10-03T12:00:00Z">Mon, 10/03/2022 - 12:00</time> </div> </div> <div> <div>Exhibition Category</div> <div> <div><a href="/exhibitions/art-and-design" hreflang="en">Art and Design</a></div> <div><a href="/exhibitions/history" hreflang="en">History</a></div> </div> </div> <div> <div>Sponsor(s)</div> <div><div class="paragraph-sponsors"> <section class="sponsors page-padding"> <h3>Supporters</h3> <p><p>The Museum gratefully acknowledges the support of the Lachaise Foundation.<span> </span></p></p> <div class="row flex-items-xs-middle"> <div class="col-xs-6 col-sm-4"> </div> </div> </section></div></div> </div> <div> <div>Summary</div> <div>Discover rarely seen miniature works from the Stettheimer Dollhouse created by some of the leading lights of early 20th-century modernism.</div> </div> <div> <div>Seasonal Opening Date</div> <div>0</div> </div> <div> <div>Featured Image Credit</div> <div>Carrie Stettheimer (1869 - 1944) Stettheimer Dollhouse Museum of the City of New York.
