The Museum of the City of New York invites children ages 5-12 to our hands-on art making series, Art in the City. Lifting the range of materials used by artists in our centennial show, This is New York: 100 Years of the City in Art and Pop Culture, each session will introduce children to a different art form/medium, including mosaics, landscape painting, felt collage, and more. Through independent and collaborative material exploration, children will be able to build a personal connection to the observant and playful ways artists visualize stories of New York City

This art-making series is free with museum admission and geared towards children ages 5-12. Museum admission is by suggested donation for adults and free for ages 19 and under. Participating children must be accompanied by an adult. No previous artmaking experience is necessary. All materials will be provided.

Pre-registration is strongly recommended and can be completed using the registration links above. Registrants will receive a reminder email about the event.

The GIANT Room partnered with MCNY to bring three weeks of Creative STEM Summer Camps to families with kids 5 to 12 years old!

Location: Museum of the City of New York, on 5th Avenue and 104th St, right across from Central Park.

Dates: Three weeks in summer, July 17th to Aug 4th. Register for one, two, or all three weeks!

Time: 9am to 3pm with the option for early drop in at 8:30 and late pick up at 5pm.

Program: Each week we ran two different camps, one for kids ages 5 to 7 years old, and another one for kids ages 8 to 12 years old. Camp themes were inspired by the museum’s exhibitions with a focus on coding and games for change, fashion, food and science, architecture, storytelling, animation, design, and more.

The GIANT Room provides creative STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) programs, online and in person, for kids 5 to 12 years old. Families can join their programs at home, in their schools, cultural institutions, public places, as well as at the GIANT hub in Flatiron. GIANT programs are designed to help kids come up with their own ideas, learn skills to make prototypes and build solutions for the problems they care about, and bring the change they want to see in the world.

Hidden Voices of New York City is a free virtual workshop series from the Museum of the City of New York designed for students in grades 3-5 that highlights and honors the individual and collective experiences of a diverse swath of New Yorkers. Individuals or classes are invited to register.

How To Register:

Register your class for one session or all five! Each one-hour, live, interactive webinar will repeat three times per month in the spring of 2024. Educators may register their classes for one or multiple months These sessions are free! Advance registration is required. Registration will open on Monday, January 15.

What's Included:

Each month, students will learn about three New Yorkers whose stories have too often been “hidden” from the traditional historical record, but whose lives and legacies shaped and continue to shape our collective history and identity in the city. They will also learn about key moments in New York City history, and see and discuss visuals from the Museum's exhibitions and collections as they connect the past to our present.

Our virtual student workshops are live and interactive sessions led over Zoom by Museum Educators in a setting that balances active engagement and privacy.  Sessions will be presented as webinars; students will be able to submit questions, comments, and observations to the moderators and complete polls and other activities, but will not use cameras or mics and will not be visible on screen.

The sessions build on the Hidden Voices resource guides, originally developed in partnership between the Museum of the City of New York and the New York City Department of Education. The resource guides are aligned to the Passport to Social Studies and help teachers facilitate and explore inclusive learning experiences that validate the diverse perspectives and contributions of underrepresented individuals and groups.

In this 1-hour webinar, the Museum will introduce the more than a dozen “hidden voices” featured in this year’s virtual series and engage educators in identifying how these stories can be integrated into your classrooms. Guest speaker Brian Carlin, Director of Social Studies at the NYC Department of Education, will provide an overview of the Hidden Voices resource guides and a preview of upcoming related publications and resources.

About the Hidden Voices Project

The Hidden Voices: Untold Stories of New York City History resource guide for teachers was developed in partnership between the Museum of the City of the New York (MCNY) and the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) in 2018 and aims to help NYC students learn about and honor the innumerable people, often “hidden” from the traditional historical record, who have shaped and continue to shape our history and identity. The initial guide drew from MCNY’s noteworthy New York at Its Core exhibition, the museum’s first-ever permanent exhibition of New York City’s 400-year history, and featured 16 profiles of individuals whose stories feature in the museum. In the years since, the NYCDOE has expanded the project by creating additional volumes, with more in development.

Join us at the Museum this fall for a special series of live, outdoor performances featuring local puppeteers, educators, and performance groups.

All of the performances and workshops will be held in person on the Museum’s beautiful, outdoor terrace. Families can enjoy the performances and then visit the Puppets of New York exhibition to explore the extraordinary creative and diverse stories of puppets in NYC.

Family Programs are geared to families with children ages 7–12 years old and are intergenerational for adults to attend with their children.

Masks must be worn at all times by all participants older than 2 years old. Advanced registration is required for socially distanced seating.

Proof of vaccination and a valid I.D. is required for entry to the event (everyone over the age of 12), so please plan ahead! Original vaccination card, Excelsior Pass, or NYC COVID Safe Pass is accepted.
Masks will be required by all participants older than 2 years old, both indoors and outdoors.

Museum visitors who experience COVID-related symptoms while at the Museum of the City of New York agree to self-identify to Museum staff for contact tracing purposes and exit the Museum to decrease exposure to other visitors.  

To enable contact tracing, in case of an exposure event, you will be asked to volunteer your contact information. An inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 exists in any public space where people are present. Those visiting the Museum of the City of New York do so at their own risk of exposure.

“Back to School” Puppet Program for Families with NYC Kids Project

Family Programs are geared to families with children ages 7–12 years old and are intergenerational for adults to attend with their children.  
Masks must be worn at all times by all participants older than 2 years old. Socially distanced seating is limited and advanced registration is required.

Join this interactive, outdoor performance led by NYC Kids Project at the Museum of the City of New York to explore feelings about going back to school and reconnecting with classmates.  

NYC Kids Project will use large-scale puppet characters of all abilities, sign language, and storytelling to teach inclusion and respect for all.  Three characters —Renaldo, Mark, and Melody—will discuss everyday struggles and model conflict/resolution, empathy, and problem-solving. Participants will get to know the characters through their storytelling and ask questions and interact with the puppets. There will also be movement activities, moments of mindfulness and reflection, and music. The underlying message throughout the workshop will be recognizing the strengths and joys of differences and how we are all connected by our need for each other and to be understood, accepted, and celebrated.  

This performance will be interpreted into American Sign Language (ASL).

“As a 10-year-old superstar (haha in my mind), I like to play basketball, science is my favorite subject, and I dream of racing in the NYC marathon one day. I’ve been told I’m pretty funny, too. I’m also one-half of a great team - I have a twin brother named Mike who looks just like me EXCEPT for the cruiser (my wheelchair’s nickname). And I have cerebral palsy, he doesn’t. Sometimes it’s annoying when people pay a lot of attention to my cruiser, but it’s how I get around every day, so I’m ok with people being curious. But having CP is something that’s a part of me, not all of me.”

Proud to like poetry, rap, reading, (I use Braille) writing, and having a great time playing beeper baseball on my baseball team. Ok, well maybe I won’t grow up to be an airplane pilot— but I do want to travel after college with the guide dog I’m going to get!”

“Kids rule!  I’m ten years old and I have a lot of energy. I think having ADHD is like having a superpower. I can do a lot of things all at once, and also, sometimes I need to take a deep breath and slow down! I’ve become a social justice activist in the past few years. I like dancing, music, history, and making chocolate chip cookies.  I wear glasses for reading in school and at home. I would like to be a reporter when I grow up and travel around the world telling stories about all different kinds of people. Everyone deserves their story to be heard and respected.”

About the Performers:

NYC Kids Project is an arts/education organization advocating empathy, acceptance, and inclusion. Performances/classroom visits include the use of large theatrical puppets, storytelling, and sign-language--as well as an extensive question and answer period. The focus is on character development and social/emotional learning. Audiences talk with our puppet characters to ask questions about belonging and understanding others. They are encouraged to examine attitudes surrounding disabilities and differences while fostering empathy and an awareness of what truly connects us all.

Cecilia Arana and Mindy Pfeffer are the co-founders and co-directors of NYC Kids Project. They have been working in the schools and communities with NYC Kids Project for many years, and have extensive experience as teaching artists and theatre artists. Cecilia is also a singer and Mindy is a playwright and they bring these skills to their work with NYC Kids Project.

“HAO BANG-AH!” Hand Puppet Program for Families with Chinese Theatre Works

Celebrate the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival, and experience the art of hand puppetry and live music in this special performance by Chinese Theatre Works at the Museum of the City of New York.

About the Artists:

“The art of traditional glove puppetry, “Budaixi,” is a beloved performance tradition that has been enjoyed by Chinese audiences for centuries. The small (8” tall), beautifully hand-crafted figures are superbly flexible and capable actors. The puppet head and hands are beautifully carved out of wood and attached into cloth bodies into which the puppeteer slips his hand like a glove. The costumes and headdresses are gorgeously embroidered miniature copies of the traditional costumes worn by Chinese opera actors. On the hands of a master puppeteer, animated by only their five fingers, these wonderful puppet figures can vividly portray all the wide range of human emotions as well as any human actor. This style of puppetry was most popular in Southern China and in Taiwan and in contemporary times has continued to develop and evolve. 

“For over a decade, CTW has been creating new productions in the style of traditional Budaixi, adapted for American audiences. We learned from masters and practitioners in Fujian and Taiwan, learning from them the techniques of manipulation and staging. During our travels we also collected the beautiful handcrafted, puppet heads and bodies, costumes, and props. Our series of original “Hao Bang-ah, Zodiac!” New Year performances are the fruit of this labor, in which we present a new, cross-cultural take of this ancient tradition. For each of these original shows, we have sculpted and created new puppet heads of the reining Zodiac animal and attached them to glove puppet bodies and costumes made by our collaborators in China.” 

Chinese Theatre Works is a non-profit cultural organization based in New York City, whose mission is to preserve and promote the traditional Chinese performing arts (including opera, shadow theatre, puppetry, dance, and music); to create new works that bridge Eastern and Western aesthetics and forms; and to foster understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture in audiences, students, artists and educators around the globe.

About the Performers:

Established in 1985, SEA (SOCIETY of the Educational Arts, Inc), is the premiere Bilingual Arts-in-Education Organization and Latino Children’s Theatre in the United States. SEA has created and produced a combination of educational theatre productions and art workshops/programs specifically designed to examine, challenge, and create possible solutions for current educational, social, and community issues. Its internationally celebrated programs include school, outdoor, community, and main stage performances, workshops, and residencies, among others, reaching over 75,000 children and young adults every year. the organization, established by Dr. Manual A. Morán, currently has offices in San Juan, New York, and Florida. Teatro SEA has its performance space at the Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural and Educational center on Manhattan’s Lower East Side.

During the Museum’s Programs: 

Family and community programs are geared to children and we require that all participants follow these guidelines. 

All participants ages 2 + must wear a mask at all times that cover the nose and mouth. Please wear a mask. 
Adhere to social distancing markers set up at the performance. Maintain 6-feet (2m) social distance with others outside your group. 
Wash hands frequently and use hand sanitizing stations.  
Do not touch your face with unwashed hands. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or sleeve when sneezing or coughing. 
No eating or drinking is allowed in performance spaces. If you wish to eat or drink you may visit the 2nd-floor café. 
Please follow the instructions of security guards and other Museum staff. 
We reserve the right to request that any visitors who do not follow these protocols leave the premises.

Family Programs are geared to families with children ages 7-12 years old and are intergenerational for adults to attend with their children.

Honor and celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day at the Museum of the City of New York with the Children’s Cultural Center of Native America (CCCONA) to learn about the contemporary and historical presence of Indigenous New Yorkers. The workshop will focus on the Lenape legacy of traditional storytelling and Lenape language using puppets. CCCONA will use storytelling bags and share “How it Came to Be” – creation accounts from Indigenous America.

Nitchen, Inc. is a community based, non-profit corporation comprised of parents of Native children/youth and Native community members from North, South, and Central America. “We improve the lives of New York City American Indian/Native American/Indigenous/First Nations children and youth by helping them develop into productive, dynamic and well adjusted citizens. We foster intercultural understanding and cooperation/collaboration between Indigenous peoples and non-natives. We address racism by providing accurate historical, cultural and contemporary programming to children, parents and teachers. Our projects include the Children's Cultural Center of Native American (CCCONA) and the Family Awareness Network (FAN).”

CCCONA is an exciting interactive two-hour program for school and youth groups that augments curriculum about Indigenous peoples of the Americas with a focus on New York State Indian nations. CCCONA seeks to counter negative stereotypes and racism about Native peoples in young children. Through workshops, puppetry, classes, exhibits and performances presented by Indigenous peoples, participants gain a fair and balanced understanding of First Nations Peoples of the Americas.

FAN is a holistic preventative intergenerational mental health support program for Indigenous families with children who need emotional guidance. Through advocacy, counseling, networking, education and workshops in nutrition/parenting/family communication/traditional healing/mind body healing/herbology/anger management/life skills/traditional lifeways, etc., we seek to restore a healthy Native community and resolve historical grief and oppression.

Raise your voice with the Museum of the City of New York! Celebrate the end of the school year with this 1-hour virtual workshop. Students will dive into Raise Your Voice, an art installation featured outside the Activist New York exhibition and hear from multidisciplinary artist Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya. Students in this workshop will hear Phingbodhipakkiya reflect on how this art installation stands as a symbol of the resiliency of New York’s Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. Students will also explore the stories of Yuri Kochiyama and Malcolm X and how their friendship stands as a testament to the power of solidarity across movements and be inspired to create their own powerful statements of purpose.

About the Artist
Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya is a multidisciplinary artist, educator, and activist based in Brooklyn, NY. Her explorations of feminism, science, and community have reclaimed space in museums, galleries, protests, rallies, subway corridors, as well as on two TED conferences. Prior to becoming a full-time artist, Phingbodhipakkiya studied neuroscience at Columbia and worked at an Alzheimer’s research lab. Her work has been featured in the New York Times, the Guardian, and on the cover of TIME magazine. In 2020–2021, she was artist-in-residence with the NYC Commission on Human Rights and her work has been acquired into the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum & the Library of Congress.

Security and Interaction: Sessions will be presented as webinars; students are able to submit questions, comments, and observations to the moderators and complete polls and other activities, but will not use cameras or mics and will not be visible on screen.

Individuals or classes are invited to register. Teachers interested in registering a class of up to 35 students can do so. Multiple classes from the same school can register if there is a different teacher in charge of the registration for each class.

Educator Workshop Series: Examining Equity in NYC

The Frederick A.O. Schwarz Center's Examining Equity in NYC series focuses on uncovering and honoring the historical roots of today’s movements for change. Join fellow educators to examine how New Yorkers have challenged inequality in our city and radically reimagined our social institutions, from schools and healthcare to housing and work.

Learn the historical context of the city's activist movements, examine sources from the Museum's groundbreaking collections and exhibitions, including Activist New York, and develop new ideas and confidence for including these stories in your teaching.

This workshop series is geared towards educators but is open to all with interest in the topic.

This series is FREE; registration is required.
