Gingerbread NYC: The Great Borough Bake-Off — Back and better than ever with 23 bakers this season, Gingerbread NYC explores iconic New York structures using gingerbread as the medium.
This Is New York: 100 Years of the City in Art and Pop Culture — In honor of the Museum’s centennial, this exhibition, which spans a full city block, is organized around the types of urban spaces where the stories of New York are told.
Byzantine Bembé: New York by Manny Vega — Opens December 8, 2023. Explore the visual storytelling of El Barrio’s own artist and mosaicist Manny Vega.

Join us for a new monthly series of New York City-themed family film screenings, MCNY’S Movies for Minis! These indoor movies are for children and families, and the super cool thing about all of the movies we’ll show is that they are all filmed or animated with New York City as the backdrop! Each screening has a morning and afternoon show with an art-making activity before each show that compliments the movie.

Tickets include admission to the museum (10am–5pm), a bag of popcorn, a juice box, and an art activity pack.

*All adults must be accompanied by a child! The targeted age group for the films and art-making activities is 0–12 years old

For our April edition of Movies for Minis, we are getting into the spirit of Earth Day with a special screening of Lyle, Lyle Crocodile, starring Shawn Mendes, Javier Bardem, and Constance Wu. Based on the popular children’s book series written by Bernard Waber, Lyle, Lyle Crocodile is about a New York City brownstone-dwelling, singing crocodile with stage freight. As he befriends the new family that moves into their (his?) brownstone, hijinks ensue. The family art activity workshop of environmental activism signs will start at 10am prior to the morning film screening.

Come and join the fun of our May edition of Movies for Minis, as we screen the classic, Stuart Little (1999), starring Michael J. Fox, Nathan Lane, Hugh Laurie, Geena Davis, and Jonathan Lipnicki! The Littles fall in love with and adopt Stuart the mouse, but their older son, George, and the family’s cat, Snowbell, aren’t as sold on Stuart like the parents.

Participate in our art activity workshop hour of creating mini boats and other forms of transportation small enough for Stuart Little to move around in! The workshop will take place at 10:00am and 1:30pm, prior to the movie screenings in the morning and afternoon.

Break out into the summer season with us for our June edition of Movies for Minis as we screen Night at the Museum (2006), starring Ben Stiller, Robin Williams, Dick Van Dyke, Owen Wilson, and Rami Malek! Stiller plays an aspiring inventor who lands a new job as a nighttime security guard at the Museum of Natural History. On his first shift he discovers everything is not what it seems, because when the lights go out and everyone goes home, the artifacts and galleries come to life in a magical way he never experienced before.

Take part in our art activity workshop hour by creating your own dinosaur fossils inspired by the movie’s lovable “Rexy” who represents the well-known T-Rex skeleton at the Museum of Natural History. The workshop will take place at 10:00am and 1:30pm, prior to the movie screenings in the morning and afternoon.

The Museum of the City of New York is celebrating 100 years as New York's storyteller. Since 1923, the Museum has documented and shared the past, present, and future through the generous support of its partners and community.

Since 1923, the Museum of the City of New York has been here to document New York’s stories and celebrate our greatest moments of reinvention. The Museum's Centennial celebrates the entire city over these past one hundred years – a time when New York took its place as the most influential, most complicated, and most-watched place on the planet.

The Museum’s Centennial will include a multi-pronged exhibition that will give life to the essence of New York City through the eyes of artists and creators, inventors and pioneers, locals, and visitors. Programming will extend beyond the Museum’s walls, reaching across the diverse and distinct communities of the five boroughs to be a true landmark event.

Objective:
Earn as many points as possible in the allotted time, 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.
Teams do not need to solve the clues in any particular order; it is highly unlikely you'll reach every site.

IMPORTANT, Take Note:
On the morning of the hunt, one person from each team must pick up your official hunt lanyards between 9:30 am and 10:00 am at Ciccarone Park (2426 Hughes Ave, Bronx, NY 10458). The rest of the team can start the hunt at Ciccarone Park or any location of their choosing.

Starting the Hunt:
On Saturday, May 14 at 9:30 am, all participants will receive an email with a PDF of the hunt clues. A printed version of the clues and a map of the hunt area will be handed out at Ciccarone Park beginning at 9:30 am.

We suggest giving yourself some time to strategize (ideally with Internet access) in advance of visiting clue locations.

Earning Points:
Clues are worth 1, 3, or 5 points based on difficulty and distance. Teams must take a picture of all of their members (except the photographer), wearing their hunt lanyards at each clue site, and then post their photos to their team's Instagram account. Teams can consult any source of information and use any mode of transportation.

Museum staff will be following your team's designated account via one of the following handles: keystothecity1220, keystothecity1221, keystothecity1222, or keystothecity1223. We will “like” each image to confirm receipt. This does not indicate that the answer is correct, only that it has been received. You will not receive notification whether or not your answers are correct.

Picture Requirements:

Only photos posted to each team's designated account will be counted.
The clue number must be included in the photo caption (e.g. "Clue 23").
Sites must be clearly identifiable or points will not be awarded.
No photos timestamped before 10:00 am or after 2:00 pm will count towards your point total.

Bonus Points:
Teams can earn bonus points for getting all of the clues in a single category correct. The number of possible bonus points varies depending on the category and will be indicated at the top of each clue category page.

Rain Plan:
In case of bad weather, the hunt will be rescheduled to Sunday, May 15 at 10:00 am. We will reach out to you via the contact information provided at registration no later than Friday, May 13 at 6:00 pm if we need to reschedule and provide updates on our event page. Please note that no refunds will be available if we move to this date.

Troubleshooting:
Although we've confirmed all of the sites are visible, if a point is unexpectedly inaccessible, post a picture of the problem to your team's designated Instagram account with the clue number and a brief explanation for our review. If you experience issues, email us at keystothecity@mcny.org.

Join us for an unforgettable evening of music with Falu, internationally recognized vocalist and New Yorker. Falu will perform an intimate set with her quartet, blending traditional Indian Classical music with a range of modern styles and genres, while incorporating the stories that have impacted her journey in music. The set will include her original crowd-moving songs like Rabba, O Lal Meri, Hori and a range of folk tunes from India.

Falu is a GRAMMY award winning, internationally recognized vocalist, composer and educator known for her rare ability to seamlessly blend a signature modern inventive style with a formidable Indian classically-shaped vocal talent. Falu’s subsequent career in the States had led to a series of brilliant and high profile collaborations with Yo-Yo Ma, Wyclef Jean, Philip Glass, Ricky Martin, Blues Traveler and A. R. Rahman amongst others. She was appointed Carnegie Hall’s ambassador of Indian Music in 2006, where her shows at Zankel Hall have consistently sold out. Falu’s highlight performances include the 2022 GRAMMY Premiere Ceremony as well as for former President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House State Dinner. Described by The New York Times as “East and West, ancient and modern” and one of the 20 most influential global Indian women by the Economic Times, Falu continues to record and perform globally, and serves as the Board of Governor for the Recording Academy’s NY Chapter. Celebrate Juneteenth at MCNY with a live performance by songwriter, musician, and storyteller Queen Esther. Special introduction by Harlem style intellectual Lana Turner.

Described by Vanity Fair as "...a brutal, original, explosive singer..." and Feedback as "...the unknown queen of Americana", Queen Esther will perform selections from her substantial body of alt-country, jazz, Black Americana to fearlessly subvert all-too-common historical narratives, revealing the powerfully triumphant resolve of Black folk in the 19th century. She will lean heavily on her latest release, Rona -- a pandemic album that explores themes about love: those we hold close near and far, the ever-evolving landscape of a desolate city and finding a place to call home in a changing and restless world. With Brandi Disterheft on bass, Jeff McLaughlin on electric guitar, and Sharp Radway on piano.

Our Juneteenth program will be introduced by Lana Turner.

About Queen Esther
Queen Esther is a vocalist, lyricist, songwriter, musician, producer, solo performer, playwright and librettist. Raised in the unapologetically Black bastion of Atlanta, Georgia – ensconced in the vibrancy of the Black Arts Movement and the sonic undertow of the Black church – and rooted in Charleston, South Carolina's culturally rich and enigmatic Lowcountry, a region with African traditions and Black folkways that span centuries and deeply inform her work, Queen Esther embraces lost American history along with her wide-ranging and ever changing aural influences, as she leans heavily on the bluing of the note to create reclamation-driven Black Americana. Her Southern penchant for storytelling entwines historical truths with personal anecdotes that reinterpret traditional and original songs, blurring the past and present, and embracing the connectedness of the human spirit. Lana Turner, a native of New York’s Harlem, is a reader, writer, thinker and researcher with a keen interest in the elements of art and style in black culture and why this meditation matters. Ms. Turner works as a real estate professional, archivist, and produces chamber music salons and literary events. An inconspicuous townhouse in the East Village was at the heart of eight dramatic moments in New York City history. On April 27, join the Museum for the world premiere of The Parsonage, a recorded album about the site at 64 East 7th Street. The evening features live performances by Theo Bleckmann, Alicia Olatuja, Dan Tepfer, and a chamber-jazz ensemble.

The Parsonage, which bridges the worlds of jazz, classical, and "post-classical" music, makes its debut on April 7 from Sunnyside Records. The song cycle features libretto by cultural historian David Hajdu and music by eight composers: Darcy James Argue, Theo Bleckmann, Regina Carter, Ted Hearne, Kirk Nurock, Renee Rosnes, Sarah Kirkland Snider, and Dan Tepfer.

Join us for an evening of song and stories presented by musician and writer Richard Barone in celebration of his new book, Music + Revolution: Greenwich Village in the 1960s. Enjoy musical performances by Barone and guest artists including Steve Addabbo, David Amram, Carolyn Hester, Terre Roche, and Suzanne Vega, who will transport the audience back to the folk revival scene in the Village during the 1960’s. Special appearances by scene veterans Delores "Dee" Dixon, Terri Thal, and Douglas Yeager; plus visuals curated by Stephen Petrus and a slide show of photography by David Gahr. Following the concert, Barone will sign copies of his book.

About the Author:
Richard Barone is a recording artist, performer, producer, professor, and author. Since pioneering the indie rock scene in Hoboken, NJ as frontman of The Bongos, Barone has worked with artists in every musical genre including Donovan, Lou Reed, and folk legend Pete Seeger. He has produced concert events at Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, and SummerStage in Central Park. His album, Sorrows & Promises, is a celebration of the 1960s music scene in Greenwich Village, where Barone lives. He currently teaches the course “Music + Revolution” at The New School’s School of Jazz & Contemporary Music, serves on the Advisory Board of Anthology Film Archives, has served on the Board of Governors of The Recording Academy (GRAMMYs), and hosts Folk Radio on WBAI New York.

About the book, Music + Revolution: Greenwich Village in the 1960s:
Even before the Beatnik Riots of 1961, New York City’s Greenwich Village had been the epicenter of revolutionary developments in American music and culture. But the 1960s were a time of particular turbulence and creative ferment, as a new wave of writers and performers inspired by the folk music revival of the 1950s created socially aware and deeply personal songs that spoke to a generation like never before. Message and music became one and mirrored society. Author Richard Barone unrolls a freewheeling historical narrative, peppered with personal stories and insights from those who were there.

Celebrate Juneteenth at MCNY with a soulful acoustic performance by Martha Redbone Roots Project. Described by The New Yorker as a "brilliant collision of cultures," Martha Redbone Roots Project is a veteran trio featuring singer Martha Redbone, whose voice has "both the taut determination of mountain music and the bite of American Indian singing" (NYT). This seated, outdoor concert is the culminating event of the Museum's Freedom Week: A Journey into Art & Activism and takes place on the Museum's South terrace.

Martha Redbone is a Native & African-American vocalist/songwriter/composer/educator. She is known for her unique gumbo of folk, blues, and gospel from her childhood in Harlan County, Kentucky infused with the eclectic grit of pre-gentrified Brooklyn. Inheriting the powerful vocal range of her gospel-singing African American father and the resilient spirit of her mother’s Southeastern Cherokee/Choctaw culture, Redbone broadens the boundaries of American Roots music. With songs and storytelling that share her life experience as a Native and Black woman and mother in the new millennium, Redbone gives voice to issues of social justice, bridging traditions from past to present, connecting cultures, and celebrating the human spirit.

Join us for an unforgettable Valentine's Day as we kick off our new series, Soul of the City: Live @ MCNY with the multitalented hip-hop, funk and soul-inspired artist Topaz Jones. After a screening of his award-winning short/documentary Don't Go Tellin' Your Momma, Topaz will perform an intimate acoustic set in the Museum's Rotunda, weaving in the personal stories that have shaped and nourished his songs. Expect special Valentine's Day touches like roses and chocolate, plus champagne at the MCNY bar!

This is a hybrid event: both in-person and livestream tickets are available.

Topaz Jones is a New Jersey-based hip-hop artist born in Montclair in 1993. Jones was introduced to funk music at an early age by his musician father. Nowadays, in the sprawling landscape of independent, unsigned rap, he has created his own island of infectious funk and quick-witted wordplay, a one-man band groomed on Smack DVDs, piano chords, and Outkast.

In a warm review, Pitchfork called his 2016 album, Arcade, "affecting" and "the work of an empathetic writer," praising its moments of autobiography about family, girls, school, and everyday life, while NPR observed it "would make Bootsy Collins beam with pride." Recent records from D'Angelo, Pharrell, and Kendrick Lamar have only emboldened Jones's fascination with live instrumentation and reinforced his love for soul and funk textures. In 2021, Topaz Jones released an audio visual album “Don’t Go Tellin’ Your Momma”- a follow-up to Arcade. This album gave fans an insightful look into the innovative thoughts of Topaz Jones. topazjones.com
