The Museum of the City of New York: Where the Past Informs the Future

The Museum of the City of New York celebrates and interprets the city, educating the public about its distinctive character, especially its heritage of diversity, opportunity, and perpetual transformation. Founded in 1923 as a private, nonprofit corporation, the Museum connects the past, present, and future of New York City. It serves the people of New York and visitors from around the world through exhibitions, school and public programs, publications, and collections.

The Museum now offers FREE WiFi ACCESS throughout the Museum's landmark building at 1220 Fifth Avenue and on our beautiful terrace overlooking Central Park. Connect with your friends and family in the galleries and share insights on our special exhibitions, including Activist New York, City Scenes: Highlights of New York Street Photography, and From Farm to City: Staten Island, 1661–2012.

 

Docent’s Choice:
Join a Museum Docent for a tour of a select exhibition or a highlights tour, every Wednesday, at 2:00 pm. Free with Museum admission. All tours are in English

By bus:

M1, M3, M4 or M106 to 104th Street, M2 to 101st Street.

By subway:

#6 Lexington Avenue train to 103rd Street, walk three blocks west, or #2 or #3 train to Central Park North/110th Street, walk one block east to Fifth Avenue, then south to 103rd Street.

Ramp access is available at the 104th Street entrance.

I'm a Neighbor

If you live or work in East Harlem above 103rd Street, visit the Museum free of charge. Mention  “I’m a neighbor,” and the suggested admission charge will be waived.

Employees may be asked to show ID.

Special Events

The Museum is available for all types of events, including intimate dinner parties, cocktail receptions, weddings, corporate meetings, and executive retreats. Capacity is 250 for seated dinner and dancing and 500 for cocktails. The Museum auditorium seats 248. Coat Check

All bags are subject to security inspection before entering the Museum. The Museum requires visitors to check backpacks of any size, shopping bags, and all bags larger than 11 by 17 by 6 inches (28 by 43 by 15 centimeters). Please leave over-sized items at home so you may comfortably enjoy your visit to the Museum. Self-service lockers are available, but visitors may not check laptops, cameras, luggage, or valuables of any size. The Museum may refuse to accept other items at its discretion, and it is not responsible for items in self-service lockers.


Accessibility
 


The Museum of the City of New York welcomes all visitors and strives to accommodate visitors of all abilities.


An accessible entrance is available on 104th Street between Fifth and Madison Avenues. A wheelchair lift is available for access to the Museum Auditorium.


Headsets and neck loops for hard of hearing visitors are available for programs in the Museum auditorium.


All exhibition videos are open captioned.
