"We Are Still Here!" Lunaapeew/Lenape Celebration Weekend mmclaughlin Wed, 03/13/2024 - 09:53

Members of the Lunaapeew/Lenape community and the Museum of the City of New York invite you to join us for an inaugural weekend of activities celebrating the resilience and cultural heritage of the First People of the New York City region.

Visitors of all ages can enjoy two days of events with musical and dance performances, craft workshops, a marketplace, and discussions led by Indigenous speakers and artists, exploring the past, present, and future of the Lunaapeew/Lenape.

Events on May 4th and May 5th from 11am-4pm daily, including:

Feel the power of the drum circle with the Red Blanket Singers
Listen to tales from celebrated master storyteller Tchin
Enjoy a musical and dance performance by We are the Seeds
Learn some words in Munsee with Language Teacher Kristin Jacobs (Eelünaapéewi Lahkéewiit)
Play Lenape Games, led by Lenape Youth Leaders
Watch a wampum-making demonstration with Chief Mark Tayac (Piscataway Indian Nation)
Hear Lunaapeew/Lenape community leaders and Knowledge Keepers speak to the impact of colonization on their communities and their hopes and plans for the future in daily panel discussions
Find inspiration in the work of Lunaapeew/Lenape artists and artisans and take part in hands-on workshops on both days

400 Years of Resilience

This two-day event is the public launch of a multi-year partnership between the Éenda-Lŭnaapeewáhkiing (Land of the Lunaapeew) Collective, with the support of the American Indian Community House, and the Museum of the City of New York.

Related exhibitions will open at the Amsterdam Museum in May 2024 and the Museum of the City of New York in 2025. Two related exhibitions will open as a part of this ongoing collaboration. Manahahtáanung or New Amsterdam? The Indigenous Story Behind New York opens this month at the Amsterdam Museum at the Amstel (May 16 – Nov 10, 2024) and Unceded: 400 Years of Lenape Survivance will open at the Museum of the City of New York in Fall 2025.

Coinciding with the 400th year since Dutch settlers' arrival in 1624 in what is now New York City, this international effort speaks to the resilience and creativity of Indigenous people today and the importance of recognizing their central role in shaping our city and nation.

Íiyach Ktapihna! (We Are Still Here!)

The original Indigenous inhabitants of today’s five boroughs are known by many names, including Lenape (from the Unami dialect), Lunaapeew (from the Munsee dialect), Lenni-Lenape, Delaware, and Munsee-Delaware, among others. Many of these communities have been displaced across North America – known as Turtle Island – with several communities nearby in the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic United States and in Ontario or Southeastern Canada. The Éenda-Lŭnaapeewáhkiing (Land of the Lunaapeew) Collective aims to establish a partnership between these communities, with a vision to unite and hear the voices of the Lunaapeew across Turtle Island. Current participating members of the EL Collective include the Munsee-Delaware Nation (Ontario Canada); the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Tribal Nation (Bridgeton, NJ); the Ramapough Munsee Lunaape Nation (Mahwah, NJ); and members of Eelŭnaapéewi Lahkéewiit (Moravian of the Thames Band) (Ontario, Canada).

Programming details below:

Starring Will Ferrell, this hilarious Christmas film tells the tale of a young orphan child who mistakenly crawls into Santa's bag of gifts on Christmas Eve and is transported back to the North Pole and raised as an elf. Years later Buddy learns he is not really an elf and goes on a journey to New York City to find his true identity. Sing along with Buddy and his friends and learn fun, new facts about the North Pole, Elf Culture, and every Buddy else!

Inspired by the our installation Gingerbread NYC: The Great Borough Bake-Off, families will come together and watch the movie before being whisked away to other holiday-themed activities throughout the museum.

Tickets* include admission to the museum (10am–5pm), a bag of popcorn, and a juice box.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Gabrielle Garo’ is a multi-instrumentalist playing flute, piccolo, alto, tenor, soprano saxophone, and clarinet. Featured on two Grammy nominated albums, she has performed locally and internationally, and has been presented with the 2019 Brooklyn Jazz Hall of Fame’s Deacon Leroy Applin Young Lioness Award, amongst various others. She has made TV appearances and is an ambassador of the Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation. Gabrielle has worked with artists such as, Beyoncé, Esperanza Spalding, Christian McBride, and Bobby Sanabria. She can be seen performing on a Tiny Desk Concert with Ab-Soul and has recently made her debut with Karol G in Medellín, Colombia, after being a part of Lizzo’s The Special Tour’23. As faculty and alum of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Middle School Jazz Academy and The Harlem School of the Arts, Gabrielle has obtained her Undergraduate Degree in Jazz Performance (‘19), and Master’s Degree in Arts Management & Entrepreneurship (‘20) at The New School.

About Alicia Waller

Alicia Waller is recognized for her work as bandleader for the jazz fusion ensemble Alicia Waller & The Excursion. A multi-talented singer-songwriter with a background as an operatic soprano, Waller has since focused on soul music, jazz, and the African diaspora as the foundation for her EP Some Hidden Treasure, released in February 2020 on innova Recordings, the label of the American Composers Forum. Her voice and sound have been hailed as “splendid and luminous,” as well as “flexible and virtuosic.”

Soon after completing her graduate work, Waller’s work and process were featured in the documentary series What Moves You by SkyHour. The short explores her vision to inspire cultural diplomacy through music, and desire to examine sounds capturing the depth and beauty of the human experience. Highlights include the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, BRIC Arts Media House, Museum of Modern Art, the Jamaica Performing Arts Center, as well as collaborations with the Korea Foundation Public Diplomatic Programs.

Waller is a voice faculty member of the nationally renowned Harlem School of the Arts. She received her undergraduate degree in vocal performance from the University of Maryland and graduate degree from New York University, Gallatin School of Individualized Study. Her first full-length studio album, Louder Then, will be released next year.

The Museum of the City of New York invites children ages 5-12 to our hands-on art making series, Art in the City. Lifting the range of materials used by artists in our centennial show, This is New York: 100 Years of the City in Art and Pop Culture, each session will introduce children to a different art form/medium, including mosaics, landscape painting, felt collage, and more. Through independent and collaborative material exploration, children will be able to build a personal connection to the observant and playful ways artists visualize stories of New York City

This art-making series is free with museum admission and geared towards children ages 5-12. Museum admission is by suggested donation for adults and free for ages 19 and under. Participating children must be accompanied by an adult. No previous artmaking experience is necessary. All materials will be provided.

Pre-registration is strongly recommended and can be completed using the registration links above. Registrants will receive a reminder email about the event.

The GIANT Room partnered with MCNY to bring three weeks of Creative STEM Summer Camps to families with kids 5 to 12 years old!

Location: Museum of the City of New York, on 5th Avenue and 104th St, right across from Central Park.

Dates: Three weeks in summer, July 17th to Aug 4th. Register for one, two, or all three weeks!

Time: 9am to 3pm with the option for early drop in at 8:30 and late pick up at 5pm.

Program: Each week we ran two different camps, one for kids ages 5 to 7 years old, and another one for kids ages 8 to 12 years old. Camp themes were inspired by the museum’s exhibitions with a focus on coding and games for change, fashion, food and science, architecture, storytelling, animation, design, and more.

Join us for a new monthly series of New York City-themed family film screenings, MCNY’S Movies for Minis! These indoor movies are for children and families, and the super cool thing about all of the movies we’ll show is that they are all filmed or animated with New York City as the backdrop! Each screening has a morning and afternoon show with an art-making activity before each show that compliments the movie.

Tickets include admission to the museum (10am–5pm), a bag of popcorn, a juice box, and an art activity pack.

*All adults must be accompanied by a child! The targeted age group for the films and art-making activities is 0–12 years old

For our April edition of Movies for Minis, we are getting into the spirit of Earth Day with a special screening of Lyle, Lyle Crocodile, starring Shawn Mendes, Javier Bardem, and Constance Wu. Based on the popular children’s book series written by Bernard Waber, Lyle, Lyle Crocodile is about a New York City brownstone-dwelling, singing crocodile with stage freight. As he befriends the new family that moves into their (his?) brownstone, hijinks ensue. The family art activity workshop of environmental activism signs will start at 10am prior to the morning film screening.

Join us at the Museum this fall for a special series of live, outdoor performances featuring local puppeteers, educators, and performance groups.

All of the performances and workshops will be held in person on the Museum’s beautiful, outdoor terrace. Families can enjoy the performances and then visit the Puppets of New York exhibition to explore the extraordinary creative and diverse stories of puppets in NYC.

Family Programs are geared to families with children ages 7–12 years old and are intergenerational for adults to attend with their children.

Masks must be worn at all times by all participants older than 2 years old. Advanced registration is required for socially distanced seating.

Proof of vaccination and a valid I.D. is required for entry to the event (everyone over the age of 12), so please plan ahead! Original vaccination card, Excelsior Pass, or NYC COVID Safe Pass is accepted.

Expectations for Participation in the Museum’s Programs: 

Participants are required to stay home if anyone in their party in the last 14 days has: 

Had any COVID-19 related symptoms (including, but not limited to: fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea). 
Received a positive result from a COVID-19 test or been advised by a medical provider to remain home because of COVID-19 and/or cared for or come into close contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19. 
Traveled to any state, country or other location that would require you to quarantine according to CDC Guidelines CDC Domestic Travel Guidelines and CDC International Travel Guidelines

Museum visitors who experience COVID-related symptoms while at the Museum of the City of New York agree to self-identify to Museum staff for contact tracing purposes and exit the Museum to decrease exposure to other visitors.  

To enable contact tracing, in case of an exposure event, you will be asked to volunteer your contact information. An inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 exists in any public space where people are present. Those visiting the Museum of the City of New York do so at their own risk of exposure.  

During the Museum’s Programs: 

Family and community programs are geared to children and we require that all participants follow these guidelines. 

All participants ages 2 + must wear a mask at all times that cover the nose and mouth. Please wear a mask. 
Adhere to social distancing markers set up at the performance. Maintain 6-feet (2m) social distance with others outside your group. 
Wash hands frequently and use hand sanitizing stations.  
Do not touch your face with unwashed hands. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or sleeve when sneezing or coughing. 
No eating or drinking is allowed in performance spaces. If you wish to eat or drink you may visit the 2nd floor café. 
Please follow the instructions of security guards and other Museum staff. 
We reserve the right to request that any visitors who do not follow these protocols leave the premises.

Participants are encouraged to complete a health screening form and include their contact information upon arrival, and will be seated by Museum staff who will facilitate socially distanced seating.

Join this interactive, outdoor performance led by NYC Kids Project at the Museum of the City of New York to explore feelings about going back to school and reconnecting with classmates.  

NYC Kids Project will use large-scale puppet characters of all abilities, sign language, and storytelling to teach inclusion and respect for all.  Three characters —Renaldo, Mark, and Melody—will discuss everyday struggles and model conflict/resolution, empathy, and problem-solving. Participants will get to know the characters through their storytelling and ask questions and interact with the puppets. There will also be movement activities, moments of mindfulness and reflection, and music. The underlying message throughout the workshop will be recognizing the strengths and joys of differences and how we are all connected by our need for each other and to be understood, accepted, and celebrated.  

This performance will be interpreted into American Sign Language (ASL).

“As a 10-year-old superstar (haha in my mind), I like to play basketball, science is my favorite subject, and I dream of racing in the NYC marathon one day. I’ve been told I’m pretty funny, too. I’m also one-half of a great team - I have a twin brother named Mike who looks just like me EXCEPT for the cruiser (my wheelchair’s nickname). And I have cerebral palsy, he doesn’t. Sometimes it’s annoying when people pay a lot of attention to my cruiser, but it’s how I get around every day, so I’m ok with people being curious. But having CP is something that’s a part of me, not all of me.”

“Kids rule!  I’m ten years old and I have a lot of energy. I think having ADHD is like having a superpower. I can do a lot of things all at once, and also, sometimes I need to take a deep breath and slow down! I’ve become a social justice activist in the past few years. I like dancing, music, history, and making chocolate chip cookies.  I wear glasses for reading in school and at home. I would like to be a reporter when I grow up and travel around the world telling stories about all different kinds of people. Everyone deserves their story to be heard and respected.”

About the Performers:

NYC Kids Project is an arts/education organization advocating empathy, acceptance, and inclusion. Performances/classroom visits include the use of large theatrical puppets, storytelling, and sign-language--as well as an extensive question and answer period. The focus is on character development and social/emotional learning. Audiences talk with our puppet characters to ask questions about belonging and understanding others. They are encouraged to examine attitudes surrounding disabilities and differences while fostering empathy and an awareness of what truly connects us all.

Cecilia Arana and Mindy Pfeffer are the co-founders and co-directors of NYC Kids Project. They have been working in the schools and communities with NYC Kids Project for many years, and have extensive experience as teaching artists and theatre artists. Cecilia is also a singer and Mindy is a playwright and they bring these skills to their work with NYC Kids Project.

About the Artists:

“The art of traditional glove puppetry, “Budaixi,” is a beloved performance tradition that has been enjoyed by Chinese audiences for centuries. The small (8” tall), beautifully hand-crafted figures are superbly flexible and capable actors. The puppet head and hands are beautifully carved out of wood and attached into cloth bodies into which the puppeteer slips his hand like a glove. The costumes and headdresses are gorgeously embroidered miniature copies of the traditional costumes worn by Chinese opera actors. On the hands of a master puppeteer, animated by only their five fingers, these wonderful puppet figures can vividly portray all the wide range of human emotions as well as any human actor. This style of puppetry was most popular in Southern China and in Taiwan and in contemporary times has continued to develop and evolve. 

“For over a decade, CTW has been creating new productions in the style of traditional Budaixi, adapted for American audiences. We learned from masters and practitioners in Fujian and Taiwan, learning from them the techniques of manipulation and staging. During our travels we also collected the beautiful handcrafted, puppet heads and bodies, costumes, and props. Our series of original “Hao Bang-ah, Zodiac!” New Year performances are the fruit of this labor, in which we present a new, cross-cultural take of this ancient tradition. For each of these original shows, we have sculpted and created new puppet heads of the reining Zodiac animal and attached them to glove puppet bodies and costumes made by our collaborators in China.” 

Chinese Theatre Works is a non-profit cultural organization based in New York City, whose mission is to preserve and promote the traditional Chinese performing arts (including opera, shadow theatre, puppetry, dance, and music); to create new works that bridge Eastern and Western aesthetics and forms; and to foster understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture in audiences, students, artists and educators around the globe.

About the Performers:

Established in 1985, SEA (SOCIETY of the Educational Arts, Inc), is the premiere Bilingual Arts-in-Education Organization and Latino Children’s Theatre in the United States. SEA has created and produced a combination of educational theatre productions and art workshops/programs specifically designed to examine, challenge, and create possible solutions for current educational, social, and community issues. Its internationally celebrated programs include school, outdoor, community, and main stage performances, workshops, and residencies, among others, reaching over 75,000 children and young adults every year. the organization, established by Dr. Manual A. Morán, currently has offices in San Juan, New York, and Florida. Teatro SEA has its performance space at the Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural and Educational center on Manhattan’s Lower East Side.

All participants ages 2 + must wear a mask at all times that cover the nose and mouth. Please wear a mask. 
Adhere to social distancing markers set up at the performance. Maintain 6-feet (2m) social distance with others outside your group. 
Wash hands frequently and use hand sanitizing stations.  
Do not touch your face with unwashed hands. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or sleeve when sneezing or coughing. 
No eating or drinking is allowed in performance spaces. If you wish to eat or drink you may visit the 2nd-floor café. 
Please follow the instructions of security guards and other Museum staff. 
We reserve the right to request that any visitors who do not follow these protocols leave the premises.

Participants are encouraged to complete a health screening form and include their contact information upon arrival, and will be seated by Museum staff who will facilitate socially distanced seating.

Family Programs are geared to families with children ages 7-12 years old and are intergenerational for adults to attend with their children.

Honor and celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day at the Museum of the City of New York with the Children’s Cultural Center of Native America (CCCONA) to learn about the contemporary and historical presence of Indigenous New Yorkers. The workshop will focus on the Lenape legacy of traditional storytelling and Lenape language using puppets. CCCONA will use storytelling bags and share “How it Came to Be” – creation accounts from Indigenous America.

Nitchen, Inc. is a community based, non-profit corporation comprised of parents of Native children/youth and Native community members from North, South, and Central America. “We improve the lives of New York City American Indian/Native American/Indigenous/First Nations children and youth by helping them develop into productive, dynamic and well adjusted citizens. We foster intercultural understanding and cooperation/collaboration between Indigenous peoples and non-natives. We address racism by providing accurate historical, cultural and contemporary programming to children, parents and teachers. Our projects include the Children's Cultural Center of Native American (CCCONA) and the Family Awareness Network (FAN).”

CCCONA is an exciting interactive two-hour program for school and youth groups that augments curriculum about Indigenous peoples of the Americas with a focus on New York State Indian nations. CCCONA seeks to counter negative stereotypes and racism about Native peoples in young children. Through workshops, puppetry, classes, exhibits and performances presented by Indigenous peoples, participants gain a fair and balanced understanding of First Nations Peoples of the Americas.

FAN is a holistic preventative intergenerational mental health support program for Indigenous families with children who need emotional guidance. Through advocacy, counseling, networking, education and workshops in nutrition/parenting/family communication/traditional healing/mind body healing/herbology/anger management/life skills/traditional lifeways, etc., we seek to restore a healthy Native community and resolve historical grief and oppression.
