Berenice Abbott Print - Pike and Henry Streets

Photo taken in 1936.
The tenements on Pike Street frame the Manhattan Bridge and seem to dwarf the gigantic bridge, declaring poverty a greater force than public works.

Berenice Abbott was born in the Midwest in 1898. After arriving in NY at age 20 she soon moved to Paris to work as Man Ray’s assistant. Inspired by the French photographer Atget, she returned to NY in 1929 to photograph the city. With financial support from the WPA from 1935-1939 Abbott was able to realize her ambition to document a “changing New York.”

Matted print measures approximately 8 x 7 inches.
