GENERAL VIEW LOOKING
SOUTH FROM 32 EAST 57TH STREET On the same day she photographed midtown from the roof of 444 Madison Avenue at 50th Street, Abbott took this general view looking south from the Bignou Gallery, on the 18th floor of 32 East 57th Street. From here, she could see 444 Madison, the slender skyscraper in the distance at center. Northwest of that building were the twin spires of St. Patrick's Cathedral, and west of the cathedral was the massive bulk of Rockefeller Center. Looking southeast down Park Avenue, Abbott saw the New York Central Building in front of the Grand Central Terminal on East 42nd Street. Abbott's general views of midtown document the transformation of the area from low-rise to high-rise--a handful of new skyscrapers rising above the nineteenth-century city. The skyscrapers still stand, but they have been joined by so many recent additions that their individual profiles are no longer visible. Return to the Middle East Side |
