President Harry S Truman orders an end to segregation in the armed forces.
Public television station WNDT (now WNET), Channel 13, begins broadcasting.
Alger Hiss, an alleged Soviet spy, is indicted for perjury by a Federal grand jury in New York City.
Babe Ruth dies of throat cancer at age 53; his body lies in state at Yankee Stadium for two days.
The Yankees finish the season in third place in the American League; the Dodgers are third and the Giants fifth in the National League.

The Cleveland Indians win the World Series over the Boston Braves, four games to two.

"According to my memory, WATV channel 13 (not WNDT) was commercial in the late '40s and early '50s. I recall watching cartoons on its Junior Frolics program; the picture was fuzzy because (I thought) the station was in distant Newark rather than the City. According to Wikipedia, my memory is correct; the station went "public" in 1961."
