Given this historic rivalry, the 1948 replacement of Giants manager Mel Ott with Leo Durocher, the colorful manager of the Dodgers, only intensified the contention between the two teams. Durocher once famously said, "Do you know a nicer guy than Mel Ott? Where is he? In last place! I’m not a nice guy--and I’m in first place. Take it from me, nice guys finish last."
