The Excelsiors of Brooklyn, 1860

Photography Collection, Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Division of Art, Prints and Photographs, The New York Public Library, Astor, Lenox and Tilden Foundations.

The Excelsiors were the first team to go on an interstate tour. Star pitcher Jim Creighton (shown here with ball) is one of the most important historical figures in baseball: the first paid player, the first to spin his pitches, even the first known to cheat.
