Yankees/Mets World Series program, 2000
Private collection
The Yankees return to glory in 1976-81 was followed by another long dry spell, but beginning in 1996, manager Joe Torre led Yankees to postseason competition 11 years in a row. Beginning the decade as the worst team in the American League, in the late 1990s the Yankees staged an extraordinary comeback, becoming the team to beat. They appeared in six World Series beginning in 1996, culminating in 2000 in the first subway series in more then 40 years, when they beat the Mets four games to one.
