The Dodgers moved aggressively to bring in more Negro League players. Dan Bankhead joined in 1947, Roy Campanella in 1948, and Don Newcombe in 1949. The Giants followed suit: in January of 1949, they welcomed their first black players, Monte Irvin and Hank Thompson. It took the Yankees till 1955 to bring up Elston Howard, their first African-American player.
