Stoops of Manhattan--Railings & Shadows: Paintings by Andrew Berrien Jones
Mar 18, 2009 through Aug 9, 2009

Complex, lyrical, and keenly observed, Andrew Berrien Jones's paintings of the stoop railings of lower Manhattan and the shadows they cast reveal the particular beauty of a part of the streetscape often ignored. Focusing on lower Manhattan's ironwork railings dating from the mid 1830s to the mid 1840s, Stoops of Manhattan—Railings & Shadows presents over 20 paintings. As historic buildings continue to be altered, or even demolished, these "stoopscapes" represent an important form of documentation, capturing the artistry of the original ironwork.
