Innovation in History: Impact and Change

 

The Frederick A.O. Schwarz Children's Center invites your students to participate in New York City History Day on Sunday, March 7, 2010.

 

New York City History Day is an education program that engages students in grades 6-12 in the discovery and interpretation of historical topics. By participating in History Day, students can research topics related to the annual theme, Innovation in History: Impact and Change, and can express themselves creatively through various formats such as exhibit boards, documentaries, websites, papers, and performances.

Getting Started

Start preparing for New York City History Day 2010! Below are links that will take you to important information.

 

 

**Please note: There is a $7 registration fee per student. Payment may be made via cash, check or purchase order. Please make out payment to the Museum of the City of New York.

 

Mark your calendars! The following are dates for upcoming History Day events:

  • Registration deadline and deadline for historical papers and websites submissions: Friday, February 5, 2010
  • 2010 New York City History Day competition: Sunday, March 7, 2010
  • 2010 New York City History Day awards ceremony: Thursday, March 11, 2010

 

Parents and Educators

Are you interested in participating in New York City History Day?  Join us for a parent and teacher workshop on one of the following days:  

 

  • Thursday, December 10th, 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM
  • Sunday, December 20th, 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM 

 The workshops are free of charge. The following topics will be addressed:

  • Incorporating History Day into the school curriculum
  • Reviewing the step-by-step process for creating a project
  • Looking at examples of projects in various categories
  • Learning about various research institutions in New York City
  • Reviewing the evaluation criteria for projects

Single visit and three session visits are available for students. Students will meet with the New York City History Day coordinator to expand their understanding of the program and the History Day research model. Educators who attend a History Day workshop may schedule a free, single session visit.

Single visit option: Students will view an installation of projects from the 2009 New York City History Day program. Classes will have the opportunity to examine students' thesis statements and use of primary and secondary sources, learn about additional History Day categories, and find out how to participate in the 2010 New York City History Day competition. $125

Three session option: While at the Museum, students will examine and analyze winning projects from the 2009 New York City History Day program. Students will return to the Museum to participate in an in-depth research and thesis-writing workshop with the History Day Coordinator. The third session will take place at your school when students are ready to present their original History Day theses. $250
