"EL," SIXTH
AVENUE LINE, 28TH STREET STATION In 1939 the Sixth Avenue Line was the first of New York's elevated trains to be torn down. Although she had already taken several photographs of El stations, Abbott may have wished to depict one that was already closed, ready for demolition. The elimination of the overhead tracks was intended to revitalize Sixth Avenue, but the neighborhood near the West 28th Street station has changed little. The industrial lofts visible in the photograph still stand and, as in Abbott's day, are occupied by garment and plant wholesalers. Return to the Middle West Side |
