TUSITALA
North River and 156th Street
SEPTEMBER 16, 1937. ABBOTT FILE 256

Built in 1883, the Tusitala was a full-rigged, tall-masted sailing ship purchased in 1923 by James A. Farrell, the retired president of the United States Steel Corporation. It was moored at 156th Street, near the Waverly Boat Club. With the construction of the Henry Hudson Parkway, the club and the ship were forced to move. In May 1938, it sailed its last voyage to Fall River, Massachusetts, where it was broken up. Although the Tusitala was seaworthy, the odd angle and cropping of Abbott's photograph suggest the ship's imminent demise.
