27TH AVENUE, NO.
1422, ASTORIA A year after her first visit to Queens, Abbott returned to Astoria to photograph another nineteenth-century building, the parish house of St. George's Episcopal Church. The original St. George's Church was built in 1827, burned in 1894, and was replaced in 1903. Abbott photographed the parish house, the oldest remaining building on the church grounds (1856), making no attempt to avoid the modern telephone pole and wires on 27th Avenue. The parish house still functions and has been renovated; a new porch, windows, and siding have obscured the building's distinctive detailing. The file number 245 is in sequence with the other Astoria photographs taken in Astoria on May 25, 1937. The 1938 date assigned to this photograph may be wrong. Return to The Bronx and Queens |
