EAST BROADWAY, NO.
294 The same day that she photographed the row houses on Oliver Street , Abbott photographed this row several blocks east on East Broadway. Standing at a more oblique angle to the facades, she highlighted the varied ironwork stair rails and fences of these otherwise uniform Italianate houses. The unusually elaborate stair of no. 294, with ornate curvilinear vine-forms and footed gas torchères, distinguished this house from those of its neighbors. Today the houses are gone, and the street grid has changed. Scammel and Gouverneur Streets have been filled in, and a four-story bank and an auditorium, which serves the nearby 1961 Seward Park Houses, occupy the site. Return to the Lower East Side |
