DEY STREET BETWEEN WEST AND WASHINGTON STREETS
APRIL 8, 1936. ABBOTT FILE 100

Both the north and south corners of Dey and West Streets were occupied by large gas stations, and Dey Street was dominated by trucking companies. Standing on the southeast corner, Abbott photographed this row of commercial buildings with the Woolworth (1913) and Transportation (1928) Buildings on Broadway in the background (right).

The bold lettering across the facades of these old buildings was a favorite motif for Abbott. The apparent simplicity of the composition, dominated by the diagonal of Dey Street, is complicated by the varied angles of the distant office towers and the strong shadows cast on the street and on the facade of the Park Row Building (1899) in the background.
