Manhattan I, File Map

At Pier 11, Abbott found a rich contrast of nineteenth-century dockside buildings and twentieth-century skyscrapers. A project researcher collected data- date, architect, number of stories, square footage, assessed value-on 39 of the buildings depicted in the photograph. Of 19 skyscrapers, 15 were built during the boom years 1927 to 1932. The four tallest buildings, seen again and again in Abbott's Wall Street photographs, are (left to right) the Farmer's Trust Building, the Bank of Manhattan, 60 Wall Tower, and 120 Wall Street.

Titled Manhattn I, Abbott paired this view of the lower Manhattan skyline with Manhattan Skyline II, a view of midtown from across the Hudson River in Hoboken, New Jersey.
